My daughter traveled to Oaxaca, Mexico at 13 years old with her school to study Spanish and live with a host family. I think this trip was important because it gave her an authentic look at a country many Americans equate with tourism. Three years later she was given the opportunity to go on a 15-day service trip to the Dominican Republic. She traveled with 15 strangers to the most impoverished area she has ever witnessed. Her group completed several sustainable service projects and she was forever changed. These experiences have impacted her education, her commitment to service and the desire to see the world.
