International Women’s Day

Because this is Women’s History Month, I can’t help but appreciate the female relatives closest to me who were game changers in our family. My paternal grandmother Audrey (“Granny”, as I called her) born in Acola MS was the first in her family to attend college at...

What are the chances?

You're studying abroad and decide to go sightseeing in Luxembourg and out of nowhere come your classmates from your university back home in the States. Really, what are the odds?

Before I was an artist…

I’ve worked as a gas station attendant. I once worked at Subway for 4 hours. I’ve collected payments from customers for a sports cards trading company. I’ve been a sales representative at a mall. I’ve taught kindergarten at a daycare. I worked as an eCommerce...

#GoodSamaritan STORY TIME: Wanted to share a quick story about something wonderful that happened to me yesterday and restored my love for humanity. I was driving #BroVyas’s SUV to the city to move some paintings around from one venue to another and one of the tires blew out with the LOUDEST sound going 70 miles per hour on the expressway. Don’t know if that’s ever happened to you, but it scared the hell out of me! Confused, I tried to slow down to pull over on the shoulder but Chicago locals know our fellow drivers aren’t the nicest (rude)— the tire completely shredded by the time I was able to stop the car.

I am staring at the black ashes falling from the tire to the ground in shock as I’m talking to my brother on the phone to figure out whose insurance we should use to tow the car to the shop. Just then, I noticed this man who had pulled over in front of me in a van walk up. I assumed he was just stopping by to check if all was okay and get back on his way right after. Instead, he totally changed my spare tire in 30° weather as he gave me a step-by-step lesson (per my request) of how to do it myself next time. (About time I learned!) Meanwhile, a tow truck driver happened to see us and stopped to help us along with his companion to wrap things up with his electric gadgets. We all hugged it out 🤗 and wished each other a Happy New Year! as we parted ways. 15 mins later, I was on the road with this huge smile on my face 😀 as I drove to the auto shop on the spare tire.

Moral of the story— for every rude Chi driver, there are at least 3 kind people out there. 🥰 What a way to kick off this new year! Thank you to the kind strangers. May your year be the best one yet. ❤️
